Hexanamide is a fatty acid ester that is used for the treatment of ischemic brain damage. It has been shown to decrease the infarct size in fetal bovine, as well as protect against oxidative stress and increase blood flow by inhibiting the release of nitric oxide from nerve endings. Hexanamide also stimulates antibody production and has been shown to be effective against various infectious diseases. The amide group in hexanamide forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules and can be detected optically by measuring changes in light transmission through a thin layer of human serum or other buffer solutions. This optical sensor is able to differentiate between hexanamide and the more common carbonyl compound acetaldehyde.
