Hexyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTMAB) is a hydrophobic surfactant that has the ability to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. The protonated hydroxyl group of HTMAB can also form a covalent bond with the oxygen of a carboxylic acid, which may be an important factor in its effectiveness as an anti-inflammatory agent. It is thought that this property of HTMAB allows it to bind to and activate cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE), which results in the inhibition of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). The structural analysis of HTMAB reveals that it forms polymeric matrixes when mixed with polycarboxylic acids. This matrix formation leads to a decrease in the rate of propranolol hydrochloride activation, which may be responsible for HTMAB's
