Haematoporphyrin is a polymerase chain reaction-based diagnostic tool for the detection of cancer cells. It is also used in biological and other studies as a model system. Haematoporphyrin has been shown to be toxic to cancer cells, but not healthy cells, by damaging the mitochondria. This causes a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and cell death. Haematoporphyrin has been shown to enhance the effectiveness of temozolomide treatment in low-dose groups of mice with glioma. The use of haematoporphyrin for photodynamic therapy (PDT) in infectious diseases has also been explored, with promising results in animal studies.
