Hupehenine is a natural steroidal alkaloid that has potent inhibitory activity against the LPS-induced inflammatory response. Hupehenine is structurally similar to cevanine and other related compounds. It has an hydroxyl group at the C-3 position, which distinguishes it from cevanine. Hupehenine can be isolated from a number of plants such as the Chinese medicinal herb Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Radix Aconiti lateralis) and the plant family Euphorbiaceae. It is also found in some species of animals, such as the Asian newt Cynops pyrrhogaster. The chemical structures of hupehenine and cevanine are shown below:
