5-Hydroxypyridine-2-carbaldehyde is a glucuronide conjugate of 5-hydroxypyridine. It is an analog of the nucleotide uridine and has been used to study protein synthesis in mammalian cells. The compounds inhibitory properties are high cytotoxicity and inhibit enzyme preparations, mitochondrial membrane potential, and DNA duplexes. 5-Hydroxypyridine-2-carbaldehyde also has antitumour activity and can be used as an antiviral drug against herpes simplex virus. This compound has been shown to have a strong inhibitory effect on leukemic mice in vivo.
