Product Information
- n-Hexadecyltrimethylammonium Tetrafluoroborate
- N,N,N-trimethylhexadecan-1-aminium tetrafluoroborate
Hexadecyltrimethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (CTAB) is a polycarboxylic acid that has a chloride and pyridinium group. It is used as an antibacterial agent in liquid crystal compositions, which are composed of CTAB molecules that form a thin layer on the surface of the water. The CTAB molecules bind to the negatively charged bacterial cell wall and disrupt their membrane, leading to cell death. Hexadecyltrimethylammonium tetrafluoroborate also has an acidic pH, which helps to prevent the growth of bacteria. This compound can be used for environmental pollution control by removing hydrochloric acid from wastewater. Hexadecyltrimethylammonium tetrafluoroborate is not soluble in water and does not form non-polymeric micelles.
