2'-Hydroxyacetophenone-5'-carboxylic acid is an acidic compound that has been shown to be cytotoxic in vivo and in vitro. The compound is a chalcone, which are compounds that are synthesized from the condensation of acetyl-CoA with three molecules of malonyl-CoA. 2'-Hydroxyacetophenone-5'-carboxylic acid has been shown to induce apoptosis by binding to DNA and RNA and inhibiting protein synthesis. This compound also inhibits the growth of human cancer cells (e.g., MRC-5 cells) through competitive inhibition of the enzyme protein kinase C θ (PKCθ).
