Hydroxy tetrabenazine is a drug that has been shown to be effective in treating Parkinson's disease. It is a mixture of cis and trans isomers. The cis-isomer has been shown to have greater inhibitory properties than the trans-isomer and also inhibits monoamine neurotransmitters at physiological levels. Hydroxy tetrabenazine has been shown to improve motor symptoms, such as rigidity, bradykinesia, akinesia, and postural instability. Hydroxy tetrabenazine is converted into dihydrotetrabenazine by dopamine β-hydroxylase (DBH) in the liver.
