5-Hydroxypiperidine-2-carboxylic acid is a synthetic compound that is used in the synthesis of epoxides. It has been found to be a precursor for the synthesis of leucaena, which is a natural insecticide. 5-Hydroxypiperidine-2-carboxylic acid has also been shown to inhibit mitochondrial function and cause cell death. 5-Hydroxypiperidine-2-carboxylic acid can be synthesized by deprotecting 5-(hydroxymethyl)piperidine with hydrochloric acid and then oxidizing it with nitric acid. This chemical has two structural isomers, namely 2-(5′hydroxyphenyl)-5′-methylpiperidinium chloride and 2-(5′hydroxyethyl)phenyl)5′methylpiperidinium chloride.
