(S)-2-(6'-heptenyl)glycine is an intermediate that is used in the synthesis of a number of biologically active compounds, including amino acids and pharmaceuticals. This compound can be synthesized by reductive amination of diethyl glycinate with 2-butyne or by the reaction of ethyl formate with glycine and sodium cyanide. (S)-2-(6'-heptenyl)glycine has been shown to be enantioenriched when synthesized from the former process. The latter process has been shown to give highly purified (S)-2-(6'-heptenyl)glycine.
(S)-2-(6'-heptenyl)glycine can also be isolated from oxalic acid, which is generated during the production of ethylene glycol.
