Humanin is a hormone-like peptide that has been shown to have potent apoptosis-inducing activity against cancer tissues and hyperproliferative diseases. It binds to growth factor β1, which prevents the binding of the ligand to its receptors on cells. The binding of humanin to growth factor β1 inhibits the activation of transcription factors, preventing proliferation and cell cycle progression. Humanin also interacts with mitochondrial functions, inducing mitochondrial dysfunction and death in cancer cells. This process may be mediated by the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and/or activation of caspases.
