It is used in the preparation of membranes and coatings, as well as in chemical analysis. 3-Hydroxy-2-(trifluoromethyl)propionic acid has been shown to degrade under ultraviolet light or with exposure to air. 3-Hydroxy-2-(trifluoromethyl)propionic acid has been used for the copolymerization of polyamides and for monitoring reactions involving nucleophilic reactions, such as hydrolysis or esterification. 3-Hydroxy-2-(trifluoromethyl)propionic acid is nonpolar, which makes it soluble in both water and organic solvents.
