Hexafluoroethane is also used as a high-temperature gas because it is inert and does not react with other compounds at temperatures above its boiling point. Hexafluoroethane has a strong infrared absorption band that can be used as an analytical tool to identify other molecules by their vibrational frequencies. In addition, hexafluoroethane can be used as an anion exchange column for use in chromatography to separate anions from cations.
