N-hydroxy-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenecarboximidamide (NHTB) is an experimental drug that has been shown to cause a significant decrease in tumor size and weight in xenograft models of cancer. NHTB selectively inhibits the enzyme glutamine synthetase, which is responsible for synthesizing the amino acid glutamate. This inhibition leads to a depletion of cellular energy and the death of cancer cells. NHTB also has immunosuppressive effects, which may be due to its ability to inhibit T cell proliferation. NHTB is currently being researched as a possible treatment for orotic aciduria and creatine deficiency syndrome.
