Description

Hexafluoroethane is a fluorine-containing gas that can be used as a chemical reagent. It has been shown to have high matrix effects and can be used in magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MR) to quantify ether linkages in polyfluoroalkyl chains. Hexafluoroethane is also used as a solvent for liquid chromatography, which is used to separate mixtures of organic compounds. The chemical shifts observed in the nmr spectra of hexafluoroethane are due to its fluorine content, which provides complementary intensities with the other protons in the molecule. Hexafluoroethane also reacts with electron-rich functional groups such as amines, alcohols, and carboxylic acids to form stable ether linkages.
