Hexafluoro-1,3-butadiene is a reactive gas that is used in the synthesis of organofluorine compounds. Hexafluoro-1,3-butadiene reacts with hydrogen fluoride to produce hexafluoroethane, which can be converted to hexafluoropropylene oxide and then to hexafluorobutene. Hexafluoro-1,3-butadiene reacts with metal carbonyls (such as those of copper chloride) to form organofluorines such as chlorotrifluoroethylene. The reaction mechanism for this process involves light emission and hydroxyl group formation.
Hexafluoro-1,3-butadiene is typically stored under argon or nitrogen at low temperatures in n-dimethyl formamide or dimethyl sulfoxide. It is reactive with water and should not be allowed to come into contact with any organic material.
