7-Bromo-2-methylquinoline-5,8-dione is an efficient synthetic intermediate for the preparation of piperidine and other heterocyclic compounds. It is prepared by the amination of 7-bromoquinoline with cyclohexylamine or benzylamine. The reaction is regioselective, with the formation of 2-methylpiperidine in a ratio of about 10:1. The transformation to other heterocycles can be achieved through a variety of synthetic processes such as nucleophilic displacement and reductive amination.
