3-Bromo-5-chlorobenzene-1,2-diol is an extradiol diol that is a component of the bacterial extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The EPS is composed of repeating units of 3-bromo-5-chlorobenzene-1,2-diol and 3,6-(dimethoxy)phenol. The EPS has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against a number of bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. This compound also shows antiplasmodial activity against multi drug resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum and cytotoxic effects on human colon cancer cells. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of Gram negative bacterial infections and may be used as a topical treatment for acne vulgaris.
