4-Iodobutylacetate is an innovative cyclopentenone with interesting chiral properties. 4-Iodobutylacetate is the first known compound that contains a cyclopentenone moiety and an iodine atom in the same molecule. It is synthesized by alkylation of 4-iodobutyric acid with isopropyl bromide followed by reaction with acetone and potassium hydroxide. The mechanism of this reaction has been studied extensively, revealing some interesting features. The allylic oxidation of 4-iodobutylacetate does not generate an epoxide intermediate, but rather proceeds through a radical reaction to form a peroxy radical. This product reacts with purine to produce pyrimidine derivatives via phosphatase catalysis. Both the allylic oxidation and peroxy radical reactions are reversible, which may be due to the presence of a carbonyl group on the allylic carbon. This property may make 4-iod
