5-Iodo-2-furaldehyde is a methoxylated compound that is part of the redox cycle. It reacts with active oxygen to form reaction intermediates, which can react with cellular targets such as tumor cells. 5-Iodo-2-furaldehyde has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on HL60 cells and other tumor cell lines. In this process, the reactive intermediate is converted into trifluoroacetic acid, methyl ketones, and chloride ions by a series of reactions. The chloride ions cause DNA damage and apoptotic cell death in tumor cells.
