2-Isopropyl-5-methylphenoxy)acetic acid (2MPPA) is a hydrogen chloride salt of 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol. It is an experimental treatment for bacterial infection and has been shown to be bactericidal in vitro against E. coli, Proteus, Klebsiella, and Staphylococcus aureus. The bactericidal effect of 2MPPA is believed to be due to its ability to induce the production of hydrochloric acid by the bacteria and its ability to damage DNA. 2MPPA can also inhibit growth of other microorganisms such as yeast and fungi. This antibiotic has not yet been tested on humans but it has been shown that it damages human cells in vitro at high concentrations.
