3-(1H-Imidazol-1-yl)propanenitrile is a synthetic chemical compound that is used to make acrylonitrile. It can be used as an industrial solvent, but it also has many other uses. 3-(1H-Imidazol-1-yl)propanenitrile is synthesized by the reaction of nitriles with amines in the presence of strong acids or bases. The reaction proceeds via a stepwise mechanism. The imidazole ring is formed by condensation of two molecules of ammonia and one molecule of propylene oxide. This chemical compound adsorbs onto surfaces and enhances Raman spectroscopy, which is useful for identifying different functional groups on the surface.
