4-Isopropylphenol (4-IP) is a structural analogue of pyrrole. It has the same functional groups as pyrrole, and can be used to study the virulence factor interaction with phosphatidylcholine. 4-IP has shown bactericidal activity against Streptococcus mutans, which may be due to its ability to interact with phosphatidylethanolamine and inhibit bacterial growth. The antibacterial activity of 4-IP has been analyzed by determining the effect on phospholipidosis in streptococcus cells. This work also showed that 4-IP inhibits the synthesis of streptococcal drug molecules such as penicillin G and ampicillin.
