(Isopropylthio)acetic acid is a synthetic chemical that is used as a lubricant and in the industrial process. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against numerous bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This agent also inhibits the β-lactamase, an enzyme that inactivates penicillin-type antibiotics by hydrolysis, which may be due to its ability to react with the sulfhydryl group of penicillin. It has also been shown to decrease prostatic hypertrophy in animals.
