1-Isocyanato-3-methylbutane is a polymerized, viscous liquid that is colorless or light yellow and has an unpleasant odor. It is used as a solvent in the manufacture of polymers, coatings, and adhesives. As a reactive compound, 1-isocyanato-3-methylbutane can cause nitration or ethylene polymerization. The compound also reacts with nucleophiles such as water to form products that are soluble in organic solvents. 1-Isocyanato-3-methylbutane does not absorb ultraviolet light and is not sensitive to radiation from radioactive sources. This chemical has a high boiling point (212°C) and low vapor pressure (0.004 mmHg at 25°C).
