Indolecarboxylates are a new class of antibiotics that are under investigation for their ability to inhibit the efflux pump in bacteria, which is required for bacterial resistance. Indolecarboxylates have been shown to be active against clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The indolecarboxylate drug class has been shown to be resistant to modification by nucleophilic reagents, such as fluoroquinolones. Indolecarboxylates have also been shown to be active against the human pathogens E. coli and Salmonella enterica. This antibiotic is an innovative drug that can potentially offer a new approach to combatting antibiotic resistance.
