2-Isobutyl-1H-imidazole is a colorless liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor. It is soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform and benzene, but only slightly soluble in water. 2-Isobutyl-1H-imidazole is used as an intermediate for the production of 8-hydroxyquinoline. The thermodynamic constants and equilibrium constants of this substance have been determined under different conditions of temperature and concentration. When dissolved in water, the equilibrium constant at 25°C is 7.3 x 10^(-6) M^(-1). This chemical has tetrahedral geometry around the nitrogen atom, with two double bonds and two single bonds on each side of the plane.
