2-Isonicotinoyl-N-methylhydrazinecarbothioamide (NMHC) is a potent alkylating agent that can be used to inhibit the growth of bacteria. NMHC is an unstable compound that undergoes autocatalytic decomposition in alkaline solutions, with release of methyl isothiocyanate and 6alkyl isothiocyanates. The presence of pyridines and alkaline conditions accelerates the reaction. The reactivity of NMHC can be used for bacterial isolation.
