Isobutyl butyrate is a fatty acid that has been used in the manufacture of polymers and resins. It is also used as a cross-linking agent for epoxy resins, as well as a surface methodology for coating metals. Hydrogen fluoride (HF) is often used to convert the carboxylic acid group of isobutyl butyrate into its corresponding hydroxy group. Isobutyl butyrate can also be synthesized by the action of boron nitride on fatty acids, or by radiation with chemical substances such as ethylene oxide or benzoyl peroxide. Isobutyl butyrate has an inflammatory effect on cells, which may be due to its ability to bind to receptors on cell membranes and enter cells.
