5-Iodopicolinic acid (5-IPA) is a ligand that has been shown to normalize blood sugar levels in diabetic rats. It also has insulinomimetic effects and may be beneficial for the treatment of type II diabetes. 5-IPA binds to albumin and serum albumin, which are proteins that are involved in the transportation of hormones, lipids, and other molecules. This binding causes increased uptake of glucose into cells and enhances the action of insulin on target tissues. 5-IPA also reduces cholesterol deposition in arteries by inhibiting LDL oxidation.
