4-Iodo-3-methylphenol is an optical nematic liquid crystalline material that can be used to produce mesophase polymers. The mesophase polymerization of this material is cationic and enantiotropic, which means it forms a single type of polymer chain. The 4-iodo-3-methylphenol monomer is also able to form polymers with other monomers such as styrene, acrylic acid, and vinyl acetate when heated in the presence of a cationic polymerization initiator. These polymers are useful for applications such as optical devices and coatings due to their high refractive index and transparency.
