- 6-iodopyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione
6-Iodouracil is a nucleoside with the chemical formula C6H4I2O3. It is a precursor in the synthesis of other compounds, such as thymine and uracil. The biological properties of 6-iodouracil have been studied extensively in animal models, but little is known about its effects on human cells. Experiments performed in vitro have shown that 6-iodouracil has toxic effects on cancer cells, such as L1210, and inhibits their growth. However, 6-iodouracil does not affect healthy cells at the same levels. Studies have also shown that 6-iodouracil interacts with allylsilanes to form carcinogenic compounds called diazonium ions. These ions react with nucleobases to form DNA adducts which can lead to mutations and cancerous changes in the cell's genetic material.
