3H-Imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine-6-carboxylic acid is a ligand that binds to retinoid X receptors and induces transcription. It has been shown to be an agonist of transcription activation in vitro. 3H-Imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine-6-carboxylic acid has high lipophilicity, which makes it more lipid soluble and more effective for oral administration. The drug has teratogenic effects in rats and mice. 3H-Imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine-6-carboxylic acid is metabolized by hydrolysis of the carboxylate group of one or both ester linkages between the two aromatic rings by carboxylesterases or amidases. 3H-Imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine-6-carboxylic acid also inhibits cholesterol synthesis
