3-Iodobenzo[b]thiophene is a chemical compound that is used for the preparation of other organic compounds. It is prepared by the coupling reaction of potassium acetone with 3-iodobenzo[b]thiophene. This reaction proceeds via radical chain mechanism and results in a low yield of the desired product. The iodide ion may be substituted with an acetylide ion to form an enolate, which can then be coupled with an acetophenone or an acetylene to produce cyclohexanones and cyclohexenones respectively.
