Description

3-(1H-Imidazol-4-yl)pyridine is a synthetic compound that is used in organic synthesis. It is an efficient alkylating agent and reacts with nucleophiles at the alpha position of a carbonyl group. The bromoacetaldehyde formed can be isolated and purified by crystallization or chromatography. 3-(1H-Imidazol-4-yl)pyridine can be prepared from acetone and carbonate, with the acetal hydrolyzed to give 3-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)pyridine hydrochloride salt. This compound has been shown to react with benzene in the presence of sodium ethoxide in diethyl ether to give a selective regioselective acetal.
