Description:
2-Iodofuran is a palladium complex that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in vitro. The inhibition is due to the oxidation of 2-iodofuran by the bacterial electron transport chain, which leads to an accumulation of electrons and a decrease in electron transfer. 2-Iodofuran has also been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of DNA duplexes, which may be due to its ability to react with amines and form stable complexes with DNA bases. The mechanism for this inhibition is unknown.
2-Iodofuran can be prepared by reacting furfural with sodium iodide followed by hydrolysis. This reaction produces an intermediate that reacts with hexane in acidic conditions, resulting in the formation of 2-iodofuran.
