1,2-Indanedione is a small molecule that binds to human serum albumin (HSA) and enhances the reaction of malonic acid with HSA. The binding constants for 1,2-indanedione to HSA were determined using x-ray crystal structures. It has been shown that 1,2-indanedione binds to the carbonyl group of malonic acid which allows it to bind to the hemoglobin in red blood cells. This results in an increase in the amount of free malonic acid available for reaction with HSA. The enhancement effect of 1,2-indanedione on malonic acid binding was observed by FTIR spectroscopy and synchronous fluorescence. This effect can be explained by hydrogen bond formation between 1,2-indanedione and HSA. A pharmacokinetics study showed that 1,2-indanedione is absorbed rapidly into the body and eliminated quickly.
