Description:

2-Isopropylfuran is a natriuretic that is used in the treatment of hypertension. It has been shown to increase urinary excretion of sodium and chloride ions, which leads to a reduction in blood volume and blood pressure. 2-Isopropylfuran binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and inhibits the binding of acetylcholine, leading to an increased activity of the sodium-potassium pump and increased cellular uptake of potassium ions. This process leads to an increase in intracellular potassium levels, which stimulates membrane depolarization and calcium influx. The calcium influx activates autophagy, a process that clears cells of damaged organelles by degrading them into small molecules that can be recycled for use in other parts of the cell. 2-Isopropylfuran also inhibits viral replication through its ability to bind with nucleic acid bases.
2-Isopropylfuran can be synthesized from acetaldehyde by reacting it with hydrogen gas (
