Imidazo[1,2-a]pyrazine is an adenosine receptor antagonist that blocks the binding of adenosine to its receptor. It has been shown to inhibit skin cancer and inflammatory diseases in animal models. Imidazo[1,2-a]pyrazine also inhibits lipid kinase and cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase, which are enzymes involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins and other inflammatory mediators. The antiinflammatory activity of imidazo[1,2-a]pyrazine may be due to its inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme activity, which leads to decreased production of prostaglandins. Imidazo[1,2-a]pyrazine has also been shown to suppress proliferation of a number of cancer cells lines in vitro, including human T cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) transformed cells and human leukemic HL60 cells.
