Isochroman-4-ol is an oxidation product of isochroman-1,4-diol, which is a polyketide produced by the fungus Alternaria alternata. Isochroman-4-ol has been shown to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by binding to the bacterial cell wall and inhibiting protein synthesis. It also inhibits the production of hydroxy radicals that are produced during oxidative stress.
