2-Iodo-4-methylphenol is a benzofuran derivative that has shown antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. 2-Iodo-4-methylphenol can be prepared by the oxidation of commercially available 2,6-dimethylaniline with hydrogen peroxide and sodium nitrite in acetic acid. The product is isolated by filtration and then purified by recrystallization from water or ethanol. This compound can also be synthesized from the triarylbismuth salt of phenol, which reacts with iodine in acetic acid to give the corresponding iodophenol. The iodophenol can then react with methyl iodide to form 2-iodo-4-methylphenol.
