Iridium oxide is a redox catalyst that can be used in electrochemical processes. It has been shown to catalyze the oxidation of hydrocarbons and alcohols with an overpotential of 0.8 V, which is much lower than the 1.5-2.0 V needed for less active catalysts such as ruthenium oxide or platinum. Iridium oxide also has bifunctional properties, as it can act as both an oxidant and reductant depending on its environment. The kinetic data for iridium oxide have been determined using a voltammetry technique that measures the rate at which electrons are transferred from the electrode to the solution. This rate depends on many factors including the nature of the electrode surface, proton concentration, and electron transfer kinetics.
