(1-Isopropyl-2,4-cyclopentadien-1-yl)sodium is an organometallic compound that is used as a coating or binding agent. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase and can be used to treat inflammatory diseases such as asthma. The (1-isopropyl-2,4-cyclopentadien-1-yl)sodium ligand binds to the active site of the enzyme and prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex, which leads to inhibition of the production of nitric oxide. The binding mechanism is similar for other organometallic compounds such as molybdenum, magnesium, palladium complexes, and lanthanum.
