Inositol-1,4,5,6-tetrakisphosphate is a phosphatase that is present in human cells and has been cloned. It hydrolyzes the phosphoinositide 1,4,5,6-tetrakisphosphate to produce inositol-1-phosphate and diacylglycerol. The kinetic data for this reaction were obtained from a high salt system with a mutant strain of Escherichia coli. The enzyme was found to be multifold more active at pH 7 than at pH 8 and showed no activity below pH 6. The enzyme was also found to be inhibited by chloride ions. This phosphatase may play an important role in epidermal growth and epidermal growth factor production because it is involved in the synthetic pathway of these compounds.
