Imipenem and cilastatin sodium is a combination antibiotic that belongs to the class of antimicrobial agents. It is stable in acidic environments and has a broad spectrum of activity against bacteria. Imipenem and cilastatin sodium is used for the treatment of serious infections caused by certain bacteria, including those with acquired resistance to other antibiotics. This drug is also used for the prevention or treatment of bacterial infections during surgery when there is a high risk of infection. The active form, imipenem, is degraded by plasma esterases in the blood. Cilastatin inhibits renal elimination of imipenem, which increases its half-life and reduces the risk of toxicity.
