Arbidol is an indole-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester that has been shown to inhibit the enzyme carboxylesterase, which is involved in the hydrolysis of esters. Arbidol also inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins and nitric oxide, which are inflammatory mediators. Arbidol has been shown to have anticancer effects on cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner. This drug is synthesized from arbide, a marine sponge extract. Arbidol hydrochloride can be prepared by reacting trifluoroacetic acid with arbidol ethyl esters under basic conditions. The ethyl group prevents the formation of carbenes at the site of the reaction, which may cause side effects such as stomach upset and headache.
