Description:

Iron oxide is a magnetic nanoparticle that is used in the manufacturing of products such as paint, cement, and steel. It has been shown to have an optimum concentration for locomotor activity in mice. Iron oxide nanoparticles are also used in transfection experiments, where they can be used to deliver genes into cells. Iron oxide nanoparticles are also being studied for their use in wastewater treatment and as a model system for iron homeostasis. The iron oxide nanoparticles bind with ferrous ions and form magnetite crystals, which is what gives them their magnetic properties. This binding prevents the particles from clumping together and allows them to be separated by magnetic forces.
