N-Isopropylhydroxylamine HCl is a nitro compound that is used as a corrosion inhibitor. It reacts with hydroxamic acids in the presence of an activator to form a stable, non-volatile nitrilium ion. Nitrilium ions are formed when the hydroxylamine group undergoes nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon atom of the hydroxamic acid. The reaction rate increases with increasing pH and temperature and is dependent on activation energy. N-Isopropylhydroxylamine HCl has been shown to be effective in diagnostic tests for the detection of bacteria and fungus in samples from humans and animals, as well as for coatings that inhibit corrosion reactions in metal surfaces.
