S-Isopropyl chlorothioformate is an acid chloride that can be used as a ligand in organic synthesis. It can be used to synthesize levulinate and a-type carrageenan, which are polymers with commercial applications. S-Isopropyl chlorothioformate is also used as a reagent for the production of polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, and polystyrene. This compound is soluble in nonpolar solvents such as ethers and benzene, but insoluble in water. The reaction of this compound with magnesium oxide forms magnesium sulfide, which is commonly used as an antiseptic or bactericide. S-Isopropyl chlorothioformate reacts with nucleophiles such as water and ammonia to form a magnesium salt and isopropanol.
