Iothalamic acid is a sodium salt that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of hyperproliferative diseases. Iothalamic acid inhibits the activity of endothelin-a receptors, which are proteins that regulate the contraction and relaxation of blood vessels, and senescent cells. Iothalamic acid also inhibits the activity of inulinases, enzymes that break down inulin into smaller sugars, and may have an effect on glucose levels. It also has been shown to be safe for use in humans with few drug interactions. Iothalamic acid has been shown to bind to DNA during polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and inhibit polymerase activity. This inhibition is reversible and does not affect PCR products.
